Certified Organic
Organic is a term that’s protected by law. Read what organic food really means.
This term is really protected by law. If you wish to bring organic food to the market, you have to comply closely with all legal requirements and you must sign up for a mandatory audit. The latter obligation is mandatory for every link in the food chain: farmers, processors, distributors, reseller. Throughout the European Union equivalent rules apply. You recognize organic food by the EU organic label. There are other private labels, next to this European label. Such as, for example, Biogarantie®. Often this arises from an intention to make the organic sector more sustainable.
“Our ideals for organic food go beyond the law.”
Legal standards
Legal standards are only one facet in this story. The organic movement existed long before there was a legal European framework. Organic therefore is also an ideal. IFOAM (international umbrella organization for organic food) summarizes this ideal together in a few simple principles.
1. Health
Organic must maintain, preserve and strengthen the health of soil, plants, animals, humans and the planet as one indivisible whole.
2. Ecology
Organic should be based on living ecological systems and cycles, concur with them, strengthen and maintain them.
3. Care
Organic must be practiced with caution and responsibility, in order to protect the health and welfare of current and future generations as well as the environment.
4. Fairness
Organic food should be based on relationships that ensure fairness with regard to our common environment and development possibilities.
These principles go beyond the European legislation on the environment. Together, these principles form a holistic view on producing food, where ecological, social and economic sustainability go hand in hand on a global scale.
The rules regarding organic food are more stringent in Europe than elsewhere
Organic food may contain up to 5% of agricultural ingredients which are not of organic origin. This list is very strict and contains very few ingredients, eg sea salt. CLick here to check the list.
